Designed With The Dancer In Mind

Our leotards and dancewear are meticulously designed for exceptional fit and comfort. More information about our design process and what makes Suffolk® dancewear so unique is below!

Step One - Inspiration

Our design process is unique in that it starts by researching not just what is trending in the dance wear market, but also on the high fashion runways and red carpets. We compile all of these trends into inspiration or mood boards, like the one pictured to the left, that help us focus on what styles, colors, and fabrics we want to utilize for each collection.

For the Contour Collection, we were inspired by designer street brands and trends we were seeing in the high-end activewear market like
ultra-flattering corset style seams, the use of luxurious ribbed fabrics, and the resurgence of the chunky zipper. We also saw a lot of dark, cool-tone shades on the red carpets throughout awards season, and thought they would pair perfectly with this chic streetwear aesthetic.

Step Two - Design

After landing on the inspiration, our team gets to work designing the styles that will be in each collection. We strive to always have a healthy balance between tried and true best-sellers and fresh, new styles within each collection. For leotard designs, we also take inspiration from what we see trending in the fashion industry, while of course making sure that every style is still functional for the dancer. And we also include coordinating accessory pieces like skirts, tops, or pants with each collection so dancers can fully customize their outfit.

This is also the stage when we decide which fabrics we want to use for each collection. For the Contour Collection, we went with a matte nylon/spandex blend used in activewear for the base, and paired it with a high-end rib material. Something unique about Suffolk® dancewear is that we do not typically use stock fabrics or colors for our collections. We have an in-house graphic artist that designs all of our prints and laces exclusively for us and even our solid fabrics are almost always custom colors. We strive to be able to offer dancers a one-of-a-kind look that they won't find anywhere else!

Step Three - The Final Product

Every detail of a new pattern is meticulously designed for fit and comfort, and to make sure it will be flattering and functional for the dancer. After a style is finalized, it goes through multiple rounds of fit testing before it is approved for production.

Once everything is approved, our sewing partners get to work producing all of the new styles. After all of the hard work, it is always so exciting and fun for the team to see everything come together and to see the final product for the first time.
